2) The Honourable Woman | Netflix, 2014 (8 episodes)

Nessa Stein - Perhaps Gyllenhaal’s most lushes role, this gripping Emmy-nominated BBC mini-series follows Nessa who inherits her father’s arms business. She ends up stirring up a sh*t show trying to forge new ties between Israelis and Palestinians. Gyllenhaal credits Emma Thompson for how she came to her British accent.

3) Secretary | HBO, 2002

Lee Holloway - Gyllenhaal and James Spader shine in this dark comedy that centers on a young secretary with a history of mental illness. She takes a liking to her boss who has a fetish for administering spankings. She starts making mistakes on purpose that lead to paddlings by her domineering boss. Gyllenhaal earned a Golden Globe Nomination for her role in this 2002 indie.

4) Sherrybaby | Prime Video, 2006

Sherry Swanson - It’ been a while since I’ve seen this little indie. I remember it being fairly depressing and Gyllenhaal being very good. Fresh out of prison, she tries to acclimate to society while trying to regain custody of her daughter and overcoming her history of drug abuse.

5) The Kindergarten Teacher | Netflix, 2018

Lisa Spinelli - A devoted teacher becomes obsessed with one of her students whom she believes is a child prodigy. Gyllenhaal stars and produces in this film that premiered at Sundance 2018 and nominated for a ‘Grand Jury Prize’ in the dramatic category. The film is a remake of the acclaimed Israeli film by the same name,
